Earth Law: Reestablishing Natural Law on Earth

Para PachaMama ~ Spirit of Earth supports the many initiatives being developed to achieve a life in harmony with Nature, from scientific, cultural, political, legal and civil society perspectives alike.

Imagine a world where Ecocide is a crime treated with the same seriousness as Genocide.

From the Eradicating Ecocide campaign

Para PachaMama has been an allied supporter of Polly Higgins and her vision to see Ecocide recognised as a crime against Peace. Ecocide is a crime against the people living with the land, a crime against our Earth, our only Home, and its recognition at every level of government would let the extensive destruction of ecosystems be answered as seriously as any harm done to human life.

At the United Nations in 2008 Polly proposed a Universal Declaration of Planetary Rights, and by September 2009 the government of Bolivia had taken up a similar Universal Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth to carry into the General Assembly, the same Declaration the peoples of the world presented at Cochabamba in April 2010 and that Para PachaMama shared in its very first year.

What is Natural Law?

Natural law is law consistent with Nature, and so it is universal. In human justice it may be described as that which the conscience of all good women and men would propose, the fairness, reason and common sense by which every man-made law is to be measured. Unlike common law, which is local, natural law is universal: justice that respects natural law would be the same in Milan as in Virginia.

Common law is nothing without natural law, but natural law is everything even without the common law.

From the Para PachaMama journal, March 2016, restored from the original Blogger archive; its closing section on a people’s tribunal and its appeal to sign and donate are left out. The Declaration it speaks of lives on beside the Letters to Mother Earth.
